VCAL

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a hands-on senior program designed to create an individual pathway for students to employment, apprenticeship or further studies at TAFE.

It offers an educational experience that includes applied work skills and industry-based learning as well as job relevant literacy and numeracy skills. VCAL programs are more focused, more integrated and more sustainable for those students who do not necessarily need to complete a traditional VCE to reach their desired goals.

Students studying VCAL must study one VET certificate or modules.

VCAL levels are foundation, intermediate and senior.

VCAL, like VCE, is an accredited senior secondary school certificate that is recognised internationally as a successful completion of secondary education.

Students who choose to undertake a VCAL program are usually looking for pathways to further study at TAFE and/or employment, including pre-apprenticeships and apprenticeships.

VCD offers a number of VCAL subjects on campus at the school.

VCAL subjects available for senior students are:

  • Literacy and Numeracy Skills
  • Work Related Skills (Café / Work Placement)
  • Personal Development (Café)
  • Personal Development (Duke of Edinburgh Awards, Venturers, Youth Leadership, Community Services)
  • Structured Workplace Learning
  • ASDAN
  • Transitional Work Pathway

Students can include a VCE subject in their VCAL program. Students may select VCE subjects to meet the requirements of a Literacy or Numeracy Unit, to credit towards Work Related Skills or expand their knowledge in an area of interest.  This can be requested with the approval from the Leadership Team or Pathways Leader.
