Middle Years - Building breadth and depth

The middle years curriculum at VCD draws upon the strands, domains and dimensions of the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS).

Purposeful teaching, plus threads and priorities such as independent learning and mapping individual pathways permeate through teaching and learning at VCD. Interdisciplinary and personal learning strands are integrated through the curriculum.

The curriculum in middle years at VCD varies from year to year depending on the individual needs of the student. All students have an individual learning plan in conjunction with curriculum objectives that are organised around the following learning areas:

  • English (ESL)
  • Maths
  • Science
  • Integrated Studies
  • Materials Technology
  • Food Technology
  • Project Based Learning
  • Sport and PE (Click here to see a diving video )
  • LOTE (Auslan)
  • Health
  • ICT
  • Drama
  • Art

Programs also incorporate ICT and literacy that are assessed through a variety of methods including Rich Tasks which develop higher order thinking skills.

Opportunities for applied learning are created for both practical and non practical subjects. The VELS framework from which these programs have been designed are based on the premise of teaching the student rather than teaching the subject.
